The culturally rich city of St. Petersburg is known for its scenic bayfront parks and renowned art museums. Lively downtown St. Pete has also emerged as a hot spot for shopping, museums, dining, nightlife and entertainment. Boasting 361 days of sunshine a year and a spectrum of things to see and do, St. Petersburg is one of Florida's top visitor destinations. Hop aboard the Looper Trolley to take a narrated ride through Downtown, or the Central Avenue Trolley all the way to Pass-a-Grille Beach. Downtown St. Pete is the center of many notable fine art museums and galleries. The iconic Dali Museum displays Salvador Dali's work in a stunning, surreal new structure. The Chihuly Collection presented by Morean Arts Center features some of the most brilliant and intricate creations of famous glass by artist Dale Chihuly. The Museum of Fine Arts showcases world famous works, and there are many art galleries lining the Central Avenue corridor including the Craftsman House Gallery, Crislip Arcade and the Morean Arts Center. The Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Mahaffey Theater hosts major shows and entertainers. The Palladium Theater is an historic performing arts venue that boasts a full-sized Skinner pipe organ in the theater's 880-seat Concert Hall. In addition, the American Stage Theatre Company and Florida Orchestra are all located in downtown St. Pete. Stroll along Beach Drive, which features a string of boutiques and sidewalk cafes with a faintly European feel. For stylish boutiques, head west on Central Avenue and discover the hip, young artist enclave of the 600 block. Head slightly farther to the Grand Central District to find vintage boutiques and antique stores. Over on the other side of St. Petersburg is Tyrone Square Mall, a full service shopping mall with over 170 shops to choose from. Further south in St. Petersburg lies the undiscovered community of Gulfport. Located on the Boca Ciega Bay with a nice beach and long fishing pier, Gulfport's Waterfront District attracts young and old alike offering a variety of dining options and a scenic view of Tierra Verde across the bay. |
